Grossmünster and Limmat in Zurich

After months of juggling medication charts, patient rounds, and way too many cups of lukewarm coffee, I knew I needed a reset—not just a break, but a true luxury escape.

Enter Zurich: the pristine, elegant, and effortlessly chic city that surprised me with just how luxurious (and soul-soothing) a Swiss getaway could be. As a nurse constantly in motion, Zurich gave me the gift of stillness—with a side of spa bliss, lake views, and chocolate.

Chapter Trail

Day 1: A First-Class Welcome

From the moment I landed at Zurich Airport, everything just worked—efficient, spotless, and stress-free. I checked into The Dolder Grand, a fairytale-like hotel perched on a hill overlooking the city. Think castle meets wellness sanctuary.

My room had floor-to-ceiling windows facing Lake Zurich, and the concierge greeted me with a handwritten note and a box of Swiss truffles. I didn’t even bother unpacking right away—I just sank into the plush armchair and let the view do its healing magic.

Day 2: Old Town Charm and Luxury Shopping

After a slow breakfast on the terrace (with bircher muesli, fresh cheeses, and mountain air), I wandered through Altstadt, Zurich’s charming Old Town. Cobblestone streets, pastel buildings, and quiet courtyards—it felt like the opposite of the hospital corridors I was used to.

For lunch, I treated myself at Kronenhalle, where the waiters still wear bow ties and original Chagalls hang on the walls. Afterward? A little window shopping on Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most exclusive shopping streets. I didn’t buy much (nurse salary, remember?), but I did let myself splurge on a silk scarf and a bar of gold-dusted Läderach chocolate. Worth it.

Day 3: Lake Day and Spa Time

Lake Zurich was calling, so I rented a pedal boat and floated along the shore with the Alps in the distance. The water was so clear it almost looked fake. I felt a strange sense of calm just being out there, no pager buzzing, no call bells ringing—just me, the breeze, and that postcard-perfect landscape.

Later that afternoon, I booked a spa session at the Dolder Grand Spa. Heated infinity pool, steam bath, ice room, Japanese sunaburo (sand bath)… I lost all sense of time in the best way. I finished the experience with a Swiss stone massage, and I swear, even my soul felt lighter.

Zurich isn’t loud or flashy. It’s composed, beautiful, and deeply restorative. For nurses (and anyone in a helping profession), it’s the kind of place that whispers, you’ve done enough—now let us take care of you.

I came back with more than just souvenirs. I brought home clarity, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Next dream escape? Maybe the fjords of Norway. But for now, Zurich lives rent-free in my mind.
