Sveti Stefan: A Luxurious Escape Where Montenegro Meets the Sea

The moment we arrived, we knew we’d made the right choice.

We didn’t go to Folegandros for the photos.

We went because we wanted quiet. We wanted sun. We wanted something a little more personal than the usual Greek island crowds. What we got was all of that and more. It turned out to be one of the most luxurious places we’ve ever visited.

Our Stay in a Living Postcard

We checked in at Aman Sveti Stefan, which occupies both the fortified island and a historic villa on the mainland. It’s easily one of the most stunning properties we’ve ever stayed at. Our suite was inside a restored stone cottage on the island itself, overlooking the Adriatic. The room was minimalist and warm, with exposed beams, plush bedding, and the soft scent of salt in the air.

My wife kept opening the windows just to listen to the waves. She said it felt like the sea was singing us to sleep.

From the private beaches to the cliffside pool, everything was beautiful without trying too hard. It didn’t feel like a resort. It felt like a private world, tucked away from everything else.

Days by the Water

We started every morning with breakfast on a terrace overlooking the sea. Fresh figs, warm bread, Montenegrin cheeses, and strong coffee. The kind of breakfast that makes you slow down and appreciate every bite.

Most days, we didn’t do much. We swam in quiet coves, took long walks along the coastline, and lounged under white umbrellas with books and iced drinks.

One afternoon we took a private boat along the coast, exploring little inlets and hidden beaches. We stopped for a swim in the middle of the bay and floated together in the still, clear water. My wife said she hadn’t felt that relaxed in years.

Exploring the Coastline

We took a short drive to Budva, where the old town is a maze of stone streets and lively cafés. It was lovely, but coming back to Sveti Stefan always felt like returning to something more special.

One evening we wandered into Petrovac, a smaller town nearby, and had dinner by the harbor. The grilled seafood was perfect, the wine local and crisp. The waiter told us stories about the coastline, and we sat there long after the plates were cleared, watching the boats drift in.

Sunset and Stillness

Back on the island, the evenings were quiet. We’d find a spot along the walls, glass of wine in hand, and watch the sun sink into the sea. It always felt like we had the island to ourselves.

There was one night, in particular, I won’t forget. We had dinner at the Aman’s main restaurant. Candlelight, ocean breeze, slow jazz in the background. My wife looked across the table at me and said, “This is the most peaceful I’ve ever felt on a trip.”

And I believed her.

Conclusion

Luxury, for us, isn’t about big resorts or flashy service. It’s about feeling like the world has paused for you. Folegandros gave us that. A place with space to breathe, food that tasted like someone cared, and time that moved as slowly as we wanted it to.

On our last morning, we had breakfast overlooking the sea. My wife looked at me and said, “We found it.” I didn’t have to ask what she meant.

Folegandros wasn’t just a vacation. It was a feeling. And we’ll be chasing that feeling for a long, long time.
