We didn’t go to Folegandros for the photos. We went because we wanted quiet. We wanted sun. We wanted something a little more personal than the usual Greek island crowds. What we got was all of that and more.

Folegandros is small, quiet, and untouched in all the best ways. And for us, it turned out to be one of the most luxurious places we’ve ever stayed.

Chapter Trail

Our Stay at the Edge of the World

We stayed at Blue Sand Hotel, a boutique hideaway perched right above Agali Beach. The view from our balcony was a living postcard—turquoise water below, nothing but sky above. The room was simple and elegant, with whitewashed walls, linen sheets, and soft sea air drifting in through the windows.

Every morning, we’d open the doors, step out barefoot, and just stand there. No plans, no noise. Just the two of us and the Aegean. My wife would sip her coffee and say, “I don’t ever want to leave this spot.” And honestly, I didn’t either.

A Village from a Dream

The heart of Folegandros is Chora, a clifftop village that looks like it hasn’t changed in centuries. Narrow alleys, hidden squares, blue doors framed by bougainvillea. We wandered for hours without checking the time. We found tiny tavernas with just a handful of tables and family-run shops selling handmade pottery and local honey.

One afternoon, we hiked up to the Church of Panagia, sitting high above the village. The path winds back and forth up the hill, and the higher we climbed, the more the island stretched out below us.

At the top, the wind picked up and the view opened wide—to sea, to sky, to nowhere and everywhere. My wife stood quietly, hair flying around her face, and said, “This is the most peaceful place I’ve ever been.”

Days of Simple Luxury

We spent our days walking to hidden coves, eating grilled fish with lemon, and diving into clear, cold water. One day we hired a boat to take us along the coast. We stopped at beaches you can’t reach by land, swam in sea caves, and ate fruit on the deck while the sun warmed our backs. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t showy. But it felt like the most luxurious thing in the world.

Back at the hotel, evenings were soft and slow. We’d watch the sun dip below the cliffs with a glass of Assyrtiko in hand, then head into Chora for dinner. Every meal was fresh, local, and perfect. One night we stayed at the table for three hours, just talking and listening to the breeze rustling through the trees. I don’t remember what we ate, but I remember how content we felt.

Luxury, for us, isn’t about big resorts or flashy service. It’s about feeling like the world has paused for you. Folegandros gave us that. A place with space to breathe, food that tasted like someone cared, and time that moved as slowly as we wanted it to.

On our last morning, we had breakfast overlooking the sea. My wife looked at me and said, “We found it.” I didn’t have to ask what she meant.

Folegandros wasn’t just a vacation. It was a feeling. And we’ll be chasing that feeling for a long, long time.
