Shanghai had always been on my list—not just for the skyscrapers or the neon-drenched skyline, but for the quiet allure beneath its fast-paced rhythm.
I wanted modernity, elegance, and something unexpected. And that’s exactly what Shanghai gave me: a luxurious trip in one of the most electric cities on Earth.
Chapter Trail
Day 1: Arrival at The Bund, Where the Magic Begins
I landed in the early evening, just as Shanghai was slipping into golden hour. My stay? The legendary Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, an oasis of heritage and high-end glamour. My suite had sweeping views of the Huangpu River and Pudong’s futuristic skyline. A hot bath, a plush robe, and a delicate plate of welcome macarons later, I was already in vacation mode.
Dinner was at Hakkasan, where sleek interiors met elevated Cantonese cuisine. The crispy duck salad and dim sum were so artfully plated I almost felt guilty eating them. Almost.
Day 2: High Fashion and Hidden Alleys
After a slow morning with room service (Shanghai-style dumplings, because yes), I headed to Xintiandi, a stylish pedestrian zone mixing restored shikumen houses with designer boutiques and cafes. I wandered into local galleries, admired silk scarves I couldn’t afford, and treated myself to a jade facial roller I absolutely didn’t need—but loved.
Lunch was a surprise: an intimate meal at Fu He Hui, a Michelin-starred vegetarian restaurant that turned mushrooms and roots into something utterly divine. The minimalism of the space was a contrast to the complexity on the plate.
In the afternoon, I got lost in the French Concession—leafy streets, Art Deco villas, and quiet courtyards tucked behind espresso bars. It felt like stepping into another century.
Day 3: Skyline Views and Spa Bliss
I devoted this day to pampering. After breakfast, I made my way to the Shanghai Tower, the second-tallest building in the world, for a sunrise view that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Pudong below looked like a futuristic diorama, and for a moment, time stood still.
Later, I checked into the Bulgari Spa for a half-day of luxury: a gold-infused facial, a deep tissue massage with aromatic oils, and a lounge overlooking the Suzhou Creek. I may have floated out of there.
Dinner was at Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet—more than a meal, it was a multisensory performance. Lights, sounds, scents, and an 18-course tasting menu that pushed every boundary. I didn’t think dining could be emotional until that night.
Conclusion
Shanghai is fast—but if you let it, it can also be incredibly grounding. Beneath the LED lights and luxury malls is a city that knows how to indulge the senses and restore the spirit.
This trip wasn’t about sightseeing in a rush. It was about savoring slowness in a place that never sleeps.
Next dream destination? Maybe Marrakech. But for now, Shanghai stays etched in my memory—vibrant, bold, and beautifully balanced.
