When I first planned this biking adventure in New Zealand, I had no idea just how breathtaking and transformative the journey would be.
With my bags packed and excitement bubbling over, I embarked on a nine-day expedition that took me through some of the most stunning landscapes the South Island has to offer. Here’s a glimpse into my incredible biking adventure during my New Zealand vacation, where every day brought a new experience and a deeper connection with this beautiful country.
Chapter Trail
Days 1-2: Arrival in Christchurch & Scenic Ride to Greymouth
Touching down in Christchurch, I was greeted by the warm embrace of New Zealand’s famous hospitality. My transfer was seamless, with Super Shuttle whisking me from the airport to the heart of the city.
Christchurch, often referred to as the ‘Garden City,’ is a place where history and modernity blend beautifully. I couldn’t help but marvel at the resilience and innovation the city has shown since the 2011 earthquake. That evening, I dined aboard the Christchurch Tramway Restaurant, a unique experience that offered a delicious meal with a side of rich history.
The following day began with an early shuttle to the station for the TranzAlpine journey—one of the world’s most scenic train rides. As we traversed the Canterbury plains, I was captivated by the changing landscapes, from alpine scenery to lush rainforests.
Arriving in Greymouth, I was eager to start the biking adventure. After a quick briefing and bike fitting, I hit the West Coast Wilderness Trail. The 13km ride to Lake Mahinapua was a perfect introduction, with a mix of historic railway paths and scenic roads, capped off by a walk above the treetops at the Treetop Walkway.
Days 3-4: West Coast Wilderness Trail
The trail led me through Hokitika, a town that felt like stepping back in time. The ride took me along the Kaniere Tramway, with stunning views of Lake Kaniere—a perfect spot for a picnic lunch.
The final stretch to Cowboy’s Paradise was a challenging climb, but the quirky settlement hidden in the beech forest was well worth the effort. After soaking in the rustic charm, I hopped on a shuttle back to Hokitika for a restful night.
Day four began with a return shuttle to Cowboy’s Paradise, where I continued the climb to Kawhaka Pass. Crossing the swing bridge at the summit was a heart-pounding highlight, offering sweeping views of the coast below. The descent towards Kumara was a scenic joyride through bush trails and alongside reservoirs. Kumara, a rejuvenated mining town, greeted me with the historic charm of the Theatre Royal Hotel, where I settled in for the night.
Days 5-6: Completing the Wilderness Trail & Biking to Mapua
The final leg of the West Coast Wilderness Trail took me through a mix of side roads, bush paths, and coastal tracks, culminating in a thrilling crossing of the Taramakau River via a swing bridge. Arriving in Greymouth, I felt a sense of accomplishment as I completed the trail and enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the town before boarding a bus to Nelson.
Starting from Nelson, I cycled towards the charming town of Mapua. The route was an easy ride, taking me through the Waimea Inlet, a haven for birdwatchers.
Crossing the purpose-built suspension bridge over the Waimea River, I soon found myself on Rabbit Island, with its fragrant pine forests and sandy beaches. A short ferry ride later, I arrived in Mapua, where I spent the evening soaking in the coastal vibes, enjoying local cuisine, and resting up for the next day’s ride.
Days 7-9: From Mapua to Kaiteriteri & Abel Tasman National Park
Leaving Mapua, I ventured into the rolling hills that offered panoramic views of Tasman Bay. The ride to Kaiteriteri was a delightful mix of country roads and coastal paths, with plenty of stops along the way, including a quirky café in Motueka.
The descent into Kaiteriteri was nothing short of spectacular, with the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach greeting me at the end of the trail. This was the perfect place to unwind, with the beachfront café offering a prime spot to enjoy the stunning surroundings.
On day eight, I traded my bike for a boat and embarked on a cruise through Abel Tasman National Park. The park, known for its crystal-clear waters and golden beaches, offered a peaceful contrast to the biking adventure.
I hiked along the coastal track, taking in the serene beauty and even spotting some fur seals. After a day of exploring, I returned to Kaiteriteri, where I spent my final night before heading back to Nelson the next day for my flight home.
