The Azores had always intrigued me, with their lush landscapes, volcanic beauty, and deep commitment to sustainability.

So, when the opportunity arose to spend five days on the island of Faial, I packed my bags and embraced this eco-friendly adventure with open arms. Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable journey:

Chapter Trail

Day 1: Porto Pim, Monte da Guia & Capelinhos Volcano

Our first day began at Porto Pim Beach, where we received a briefing on microplastics before rolling up our sleeves for a quick beach cleanup. It was heartening to see my efforts directly contributing to preserving such a pristine coastline.

Next, we toured the Whale Factory, delving into the history of whaling in the Azores and learning about the cetaceans that now thrive in these waters. The Neptuno Trail up Monte da Guia was a highlight, offering breathtaking views of protected marine areas at Caldeirinhas.

After a picnic at Feteira Park, we visited the awe-inspiring Capelinhos Volcano and its Interpretation Center, where I marveled at the power of nature and the resilience of the Azorean people.

Day 2: Snorkeling & Beach Cleanup

Day two was all about the ocean! A morning snorkeling session introduced me to the vibrant marine life, while also allowing me to help collect trash from the seabed. It felt like a treasure hunt, except our treasures were efforts toward a cleaner ocean.

Lunch at Porto Pim Beach was the perfect interlude, complete with stunning ocean views. The afternoon was spent continuing our cleanup efforts, this time focusing on trash from the beach and a nearby river. It was both humbling and inspiring to see the difference a small group can make.

Day 3: Botanical Garden & Trekking

Cetacean observation was the star of day three. Seeing dolphins and whales in their natural habitat was nothing short of magical. It was a reminder of why these conservation efforts matter so deeply.

Lunch back at Porto Pim Beach felt like coming home, and the afternoon’s mission—cleaning up discarded cigars—underscored the small but significant ways we can protect our planet. By 4:00 PM, we were back in the city, where I enjoyed some well-earned free time to explore Faial’s charming streets and local shops.

Day 4: Hiking & Nature Immersion

The Neptuno Trail became my favorite place, a serene trek surrounded by vibrant flora and the sounds of the ocean. I found peace in the island’s quiet beauty, a far cry from the usual hustle of motherhood. Hiking here felt like reconnecting with myself and with nature.

Day 5: Pico Island’s Treasures

On our final day, we hopped over to Pico Island, home to UNESCO-protected vineyards and stunning volcanic landscapes. The Laje das Rosas and the volcanic rock pyramids at Maroissos were striking, and the Lajes village’s Beleiros Museum offered a fascinating look into Azorean culture.

This trip wasn’t just about breathtaking landscapes or unique experiences. It was about participating in something bigger than myself—helping to conserve the ocean, preserve endemic species, and protect these islands for future generations.

As a mom, I left inspired to instill these values in my children and to seek out more eco-friendly travel adventures in the future. If you’re looking for a destination that combines natural beauty with meaningful action, the Azores is the place to be.
