Embarking on the most enchanting chapter of our lives, my newlywed spouse and I decided to celebrate our union in the picturesque landscapes of the Portugal and Spain honeymoon.

A 16-day itinerary awaited us, promising a symphony of cultural exploration, delectable cuisine, and awe-inspiring scenery. Join us as we recount the intricacies of our honeymoon, a journey filled with idyllic moments and unforgettable experiences.

Chapter Trail

Day 1 to Day 2: Welcome to Lisbon

Our love story unfolded against the backdrop of Lisbon’s timeless charm. Landing at Lisbon Airport, we were swiftly transported to the lap of luxury, the Valverde Lisboa 5* Hotel, where every corner exuded opulence. Nestled in the heart of the city, the hotel became our sanctuary, a perfect base for the adventures that awaited.

Our first evening, bathed in the warm glow of Lisbon’s sunset, was dedicated to a Private Foodie Tour, a culinary escapade off the beaten track. As the clock struck 13:30, we found ourselves strolling through the cobbled streets of Mouraria, one of Lisbon’s oldest and most authentic neighborhoods. Birthplace of Fado music, this district whispered stories of history, culture, and untold tales.

The tour unfolded like a carefully orchestrated symphony, with more than 10 delectable ingredients, foods, and beverages prepared and served on the spot in seven typical local specialty shops, taverns, and restaurants. Each bite was a revelation, a sensory journey into the heart of Lisbon’s multicultural tapestry. As we meandered through the charming streets, our senses were awakened, and our taste buds danced with delight.

Day 2 dawned with the promise of exploration. Nestled in the luxurious embrace of our hotel, we indulged in a leisurely breakfast that tantalized our palates. The city beckoned, and our private guide, a fount of knowledge, awaited us in the hotel lobby at 09:45 AM for a Lisbon Highlights Tour.

Time permitting, our guide extended our journey to Belem, unveiling significant monuments like the iconic Belem Tower. The day concluded with our driver gently guiding us back to the comforting embrace of Valverde Lisboa. As night fell, we ventured into one of Lisbon’s top-rated restaurants, savoring a memorable dinner that marked the end of a perfect day in the City of Seven Hills.

Day 3: Sintra Day Tour

Waking up in Lisbon, our senses still tingling from the enchanting melodies of Fado and the flavors of the previous day, we indulged in another delightful breakfast at the Valverde Lisboa. The day’s agenda promised a journey to the nearby fairy-tale town of Sintra, a place where history and fantasy coalesce.

Promptly at 08:00, our guide and driver whisked us away on a private tour, embarking on a journey through Portugal’s rich cultural and architectural tapestry. The day unfolded like a carefully composed symphony, with each note resonating with the charm of Sintra.

Our first stop, the whimsical Pena Park, greeted us with lush greenery and vibrant hues. We strolled through secret caves, letting the air be filled with the echoes of history. The climax awaited at the Pena Palace, a kaleidoscopic masterpiece perched atop the Sintra hills. Marveling at panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, we delved into the palace’s fascinating history, captivated by tales of royalty and romanticism.

Descending into Sintra’s historical center, our guide unraveled the maritime past of this charming town nestled by the water. We explored narrow lanes, each whispering tales of seafaring adventures and cultural exchanges. The town’s unique atmosphere, a blend of medieval charm and coastal allure, left an indelible mark on our hearts.

The journey continued to the stylish town of Cascais, where a relaxing walk along the bay and a leisurely lunch embraced us. The drive back to Lisbon was nothing short of magical, as we traversed the Natural Park, making stops at Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais, and Monserrate. The grand finale awaited at Roca Cape, where the great cliffs marked the westernmost point of continental Europe.

Day 4: Lisbon to Comporta

Our chariot for the next leg of the journey, a sleek BMW 3-series Automatic, awaited us with the promise of open roads and new adventures.

Embarking on a southward journey, the scenic drive to Comporta unfurled before us like a mesmerizing canvas. The landscape transformed, revealing the beauty of Portugal‘s countryside. Arriving at the 5 Stars Sublime Comporta Hotel, we found ourselves in a haven where relaxation and indulgence took center stage.

Comporta, with its blend of sand dunes, rice fields, and deserted beaches, offered a multitude of activities. Our days were filled with horseback riding, picnics on secluded beaches, excursions to artisanal fishing ports, and wine tasting in one of the world’s best wine destinations. The Sublime Spa beckoned us to unwind and indulge, adding a touch of pampering to our Comporta experience.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we found ourselves contemplating the beauty of Comporta, a place that effortlessly embraced the rhythm of Portugal’s coastal lifestyle. The night unfolded with the promise of sublime dining experiences, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Day 5: Comporta Bliss

In the heart of Comporta, a day of pure indulgence and relaxation awaited us. With the Sublime Comporta Hotel as our haven, we embraced the serenity that surrounded us. The morning sun painted the sky in hues of pink and gold as we savored a leisurely breakfast, setting the tone for a day of unhurried exploration.

Our Comporta bliss unfolded with the freedom to explore the exquisite beauty of this coastal gem at our own pace. The beauty of Comporta lies not just in its pristine beaches and rolling dunes but also in the unhurried rhythm of life. The day was ours to revel in the simplicity of a beachside stroll, to bask in the warmth of the sun, and to savor the sea breeze.

The Sublime Spa, an oasis of tranquility, invited us to succumb to its therapeutic embrace. Pampered by skilled hands and surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, we let go of any lingering stresses, allowing Comporta’s laid-back atmosphere to permeate our souls.

As the day unfolded, we discovered the myriad activities the region offered. Whether it was a gentle exploration of the charming villages nearby or a serene picnic on a secluded beach, Comporta unveiled itself as a treasure trove of experiences.

Come evening, the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the landscape. Dining in one of Comporta’s renowned restaurants, we immersed ourselves in the flavors of Portugal. From the freshest seafood to the finest local wines, each dish told a tale of the region’s culinary prowess.

Under the starlit sky, Comporta whispered its secrets, and we found ourselves grateful for a day that seamlessly blended relaxation and exploration. Day 6: Comporta to Lisbon to Bilbao to San Sebastian

As the sun painted the Comporta sky with hues of dawn, we bid a fond farewell to the sublime coastal haven. Checking out of the Sublime Comporta Hotel, we settled any lingering bills and made our way to the rental car office. Our trusty Audi A4 Automatic awaited, promising a comfortable journey through the picturesque landscapes that lay ahead.

The road beckoned, and we embarked on a journey back to Lisbon. The drive became a tapestry of changing sceneries, with each passing mile weaving a thread of memories from Comporta. Returning the rental car at Lisbon Airport marked the end of our Portuguese road adventure.

Boarding a flight to Bilbao made us feel a wave of excitement for the Spanish chapter of our journey. The transition from Portugal to Spain was seamless, and upon landing in Bilbao at 18:55, our driver awaited, ready to whisk us away to the enchanting city of San Sebastian.

Day 7: Basque Wine and Cheese Tour

Awakening in the heart of San Sebastian, we eagerly embraced the Basque Country’s rich culinary heritage. After a delightful breakfast at our hotel, we stepped into a day of exploration led by an expert guide. Our private, full-day Basque Wine and Cheese Tour promised a sensory journey through quaint villages and lush landscapes.

Venturing into the rolling Basque hills, our first stop was a real sheep farm, where the culinary journey began with Idiazabal cheese. The owner guided us through the farm, sharing intimate insights into the cheese-making process. From milking to tasting, we immersed ourselves in the world of this culinary icon, savoring four different cheeses expertly paired with local wines or cider.

The tour then meandered through the vineyards of the Txakoli wine region, home to a charming family-owned winery. Here, we discovered the secrets behind Txakoli wines, sampling the local varieties against the backdrop of sea-view terraces. A delightful pairing with tuna, chili peppers, and chorizo elevated the experience, creating a symphony of flavors.

Our journey continued to the charming fishing village of Getaria, the hometown of Juan Sebastian Elcano, the first man to sail around the world. The harbor, lined with typical grilled fish restaurants, beckoned us for a seaside lunch. Post-meal, a leisurely stroll through the medieval streets and picturesque fisherman’s houses completed our exploration.

As the day unfolded, we found ourselves immersed in the Basque Country’s culinary and cultural tapestry. The views, the flavors, and the stories merged into a seamless experience, creating memories that would forever be etched in our hearts. The return to San Sebastian marked the end of a day well-spent, with anticipation building for the adventures that lay ahead in this enchanting Spanish city.

Day 8: Biarritz and St Jean de Luz Tour

Waking up to the sun-kissed charm of San Sebastian, we embarked on a new day of exploration. Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at the hotel, fueling us for the adventure that awaited. 

Our first stop unfolded in Hendaia, home to the longest beach in the Basque Country. Sundays were special here, known for indulging in delicious oysters from beachfront stalls. The charm of the seaside town set the tone for the day as we explored the culinary delights along the coast.

Traversing the coastal “La Corniche Road,” we made our way to Saint Jean de Luz, a former Basque Corsairs’ capital. Contrasting with the bustling energy of nearby Biarritz, St Jean de Luz welcomed us with a more relaxed ambiance. Stepping into its charming old town, we found ourselves amidst 17th-century Basque houses, each echoing tales of a rich maritime past.

Continuing our journey, we arrived in Biarritz, a luxurious French seaside town with a history steeped in elegance. A highlight awaited as we visited a private collector’s country home for lunch, offering a taste of authentic local life. The lunch, a culmination of flavors curated by the region’s culinary prowess, provided a moment of gastronomic bliss.

As the afternoon sun bathed Biarritz in golden hues, we explored its elegant streets, uncovering the legacy left by Empress Eugenie and European royalty. The town’s cultural richness unfolded, and we discovered why Biarritz became a favored destination for the elite.

Returning to San Sebastian, the day had woven a narrative of coastal beauty, culinary delights, and historical richness. The memories created in Hendaia, Saint Jean de Luz, and Biarritz became threads in the tapestry of our journey, setting the stage for the adventures yet to come.

Day 9: Afternoon Pintxos Experience

With the picturesque beauty of San Sebastian as our backdrop, we relished a leisurely morning at our own pace. At the designated meeting point in the evening, our guide shared the art of navigating the vibrant Pintxos scene. Pintxos, the Basque version of tapas, adorned every bar in the Old Town. Yet, finding the best ones required insider knowledge, a treasure trove of culinary secrets that our guide graciously shared.

Each Pintxo, a small masterpiece on a skewer or toothpick, told a story of Basque culinary tradition. Paired with local drinks, from cider to whites and reds, the evening was a celebration of San Sebastian’s gastronomic prowess.

Guided through the enchanting streets, we not only savored the culinary delights but also soaked in the rich cultural ambiance. The bustling bars, the animated conversations, and the aromatic symphony of flavors created an experience that transcended mere dining.

As the night unfolded, we found ourselves immersed in the soul of San Sebastian, a city that blended tradition with innovation. The Pintxos Experience became a culinary journey, an exploration of the city’s heart, leaving us with flavors and memories that would linger long after the last Pintxo had been savored.

Day 10 to Day 11: Mallorca Private Sailing Excursion

As the sun cast its first light over San Sebastian, we bid farewell to the Basque Country, our hearts filled with the echoes of its culinary treasures. Checking out of the hotel, we made our way to Bilbao Airport, where a new chapter awaited. 

Arriving in Mallorca, we stepped into the vibrant atmosphere of the airport. Checking into the grand luxury Jumeirah Port de Soller Hotel, we found ourselves surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Mallorca. The day unfolded with the freedom to explore, whether it be wandering through the charming villages or venturing into the heart of Palma de Mallorca.

Awakening to the gentle sea breeze of Port Soller, we embraced the day with the promise of a Private Sailing Excursion. A luxurious Motor Yacht with a skilled skipper awaited, ready to unveil the hidden gems along Mallorca’s spectacular coastline.

Embarking on this maritime adventure, we marveled at the beauty of South East Mallorca. Crystal clear waters and hidden coves beckoned, promising a day of tranquility and exploration. Our skipper skillfully navigated, allowing us to discover quiet beaches even in the height of summer.

The excursion included a stop for lunch at one of the excellent coastal restaurants, a moment to savor local flavors against the backdrop of the Mediterranean. The rhythmic sound of the waves became the soundtrack to a day filled with relaxation and awe-inspiring scenery.

Returning to Port Soller as the sun began its descent, the day at sea had etched memories of Mallorca’s coastal splendor. Whether it was snorkeling in hidden coves or simply basking in the Mediterranean sun, the sailing excursion became a highlight, inviting us to appreciate Mallorca’s beauty from a unique perspective. As the night unfolded, we found ourselves immersed in the enchanting surroundings of Jumeirah Port de Soller Hotel, each moment shaping our Mallorcan sojourn into a tapestry of coastal wonders and luxury indulgence.


Day 12: Mallorca Finca and Winery Experience

As the golden Mallorcan sun graced the landscape, we embarked on a journey to explore the island’s traditional fincas and wineries. At 10:30 AM, our driver met us in the hotel lobby, signaling the beginning of a day filled with the rich history and exquisite flavors of Mallorcan wine culture.

The first stop transported us back in time to the oldest winery in Mallorca, founded in 1711. Strolling through the historic cellars, we gained insights into the winemaking process that had been perfected over centuries. Each sip of the carefully crafted wines resonated with the island’s viticultural heritage.

Moving on to a finca that had been in the same family for six generations, we immersed ourselves in the artistry of horticulture. Walking among the vines, we witnessed the intricate connection between the land and the quality of the wine produced. The final winery treated us to the innovation of Mallorcan viticulture – the Cap Salines blue wine. As the day unfolded, we returned to our seaside haven at Jumeirah Port de Soller Hotel, where the afternoon offered a serene retreat by the azure waters. The echoes of Mallorca’s winemaking legacy lingered, creating a symphony of flavors and memories that would accompany us into the evening.

Day 13 to Day 14: Sidecar Tour of Barcelona

With Mallorca’s beauty etched in our hearts, we prepared for the next leg of our journey. Upon landing in Barcelona, a private transfer seamlessly whisked us to our accommodation. The city, with its architectural wonders and cultural richness, promised a unique tapestry of experiences.

The evening unfolded at a leisurely pace, allowing us to settle into the vibrant ambiance of Barcelona. The Catalan spirit embraced us as we strolled through the lively streets, anticipating the adventures that lay ahead. Rooted in WWII history, the classic motorcycles provided a nostalgic backdrop as we cruised through the picturesque backstreets and majestic avenues.

The day unfolded with numerous stops, some quick for explanations and photos, others allowing us to walk and absorb the surroundings. The tour seamlessly blended historical and architectural highlights with the charming backstreets, creating a comprehensive view of Barcelona’s diversity.

As the sidecar tour concluded, we found ourselves enriched with insights into Barcelona’s past and present. The dynamic energy of the city and its architectural marvels became a vivid memory, setting the stage for the culinary adventure that awaited.

Day 15 to Day 16: Barcelona's Goodbyes

The morning sun bathed Barcelona in a warm glow, setting the stage for a day infused with culinary delights. As the appointed hour approached, we met our guide at the designated meeting point, ready to embark on a gastronomic journey through the heart of Barcelona. Our expert guide led us to Gracia, a hidden gem away from the touristy downtown area. This neighborhood, with its small-town charm, promised an authentic exploration of local flavors.

Wandering through the meandering streets, we discovered tucked-away restaurants and family-run eateries, each with its own unique story and homemade specialties. The locals, proud custodians of culinary traditions passed down through generations, shared their insights, making each stop a cultural revelation.

Gracia’s central squares came alive with activity as we explored the old town hall and soaked in the rich cultural heritage of the region. The vibrant village, reluctant in its merger with the big city, retained a distinct character, filled with cafés, bars, and lively food markets. We reflected on the incredible 16 days spent exploring the wonders of Portugal and Spain, from the historic streets of Lisbon to the coastal beauty of San Sebastian, the idyllic landscapes of Mallorca, and the vibrant streets of Barcelona. Each destination had contributed its own unique chapter to our journey.

As we approached the airport, the driver bid us farewell, echoing the sentiment of the entire trip – a seamless blend of relaxation, exploration, and cultural immersion. The memories we made, the flavors we savored, and the beauty we witnessed would stay with us as cherished souvenirs, a testament to the richness of the Iberian Peninsula and the joy of a well-curated honeymoon.
