The Andes mountains in Bolivia are a land of breathtaking landscapes, unique cultures, and thrilling adventures. My recent 5-day trip to this remarkable region was filled with unforgettable experiences, from conquering the infamous Death Road to witnessing the otherworldly beauty of the Uyuni Salt Flats. Join me as I recount my journey through the highlights of Bolivia.

Chapter Trail

Day 1: Conquering Death Road and the Journey to Uyuni

Our adventure began with an adrenaline-pumping start as we embarked on the Death Road tour. The trip kicked off with a 22 km downhill ride on an asphalt road, allowing us to build confidence and get acquainted with our bikes. With the safety van trailing close behind, we made our way to the police checkpoint, where we paid an entrance fee to access the national park.

The next leg of the journey was the infamous “Death Road” itself, a thrilling 10 km descent in a compact group, ensuring our safety at all times. Along the way, we took breaks to enjoy snacks, including chocolates and fruits, and to capture the breathtaking scenery with our cameras.

As we covered approximately 32 km, we were treated to a refreshing waterfall splash before reaching Yolosa, our final stop for the day. Here, we found solace in a hotel with showers, a swimming pool, and a delicious buffet lunch. The day ended with a return to La Paz through a new road, offering more stunning views of the Andes.

By 8:00 p.m., we were back at the bus office for check-in, ready for the overnight journey to Uyuni. The bus ride was a luxurious experience, providing us with dinner, breakfast, water, hot drinks, heating, Wi-Fi, and even a first aid kit. All thanks to Baboo’s travel management platform.

Day 2: Uyuni Salt Flats - A Surreal Landscape

We arrived in Uyuni at 7:00 a.m., where a guide welcomed us and directed us to a coffee shop for breakfast. Our day’s adventure began at 10:30 a.m. with a visit to the eerie “Train Graveyard,” a testament to Bolivia‘s rich history of locomotives.

Next, we explored the town of Colchani, where salt miners craft souvenirs from salt and llama/alpaca wool. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the vast Uyuni Salt Flats themselves, where we marveled at the salt’s white expanse and explored “Ojos de Agua Salada” and a salt hotel turned museum.

Lunch was served near “Isla Incahuasi” (Fish Island), where we hiked to see giant cacti and petrified coral formations. The afternoon was filled with fun, perspective-distorted photos on the blinding white salt flats and a mesmerizing sunset enjoyed with a glass of wine.

Day 3: Volcanoes, Lagoons, and Natural Beauty

Day 3 began at 7:00 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a visit to the Chiguana Desert, surrounded by volcanoes, including the active Ollagüe. Our local family travel expert for international travel accompanied us along the rocky “El Pasito Tuntun” road, visiting Cañapa, Hedionda, and Chiarcota Lagoons, home to flamingoes.

After lunch, we entered the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, exploring the Desert of Siloli, the world’s highest and driest desert. We marveled at the “Rock tree,” a lava rock formation, and enjoyed a stunning overlook of the Red Lagoon, where pink flamingos thrived. We spent the night in a shared family lodging in Huayllajara, surrounded by the beauty of the Andean landscape.

Day 4: Geysers, Hot Springs, and Surreal Landscapes

An early start at 5:00 a.m. led us to the Sol de Mañana Geyser, where we walked alongside fumaroles and steaming craters. The day continued with a relaxing bath in an open-air hot spring, followed by a visit to the Dali Desert and the Green and White Lagoon, set against the imposing Licancabur volcano.

We returned to Uyuni, enjoying the breathtaking scenery and indulging in a picnic lunch along the way.

Day 5: Return to La Paz
