Hello, fellow adventurers! My name is Inti, and I’m incredibly excited to share with you the epic tale of my month-long journey through the enchanting Mayan Riviera.

This adventure was not just a holiday; it was a special project between me and my dad, Rick, the COO & Co-founder of Baboo Travel. He believed that by documenting my experiences, we could inspire other young explorers and their families to embark on their own adventures.

So, with a heart full of excitement and a diary to fill, my mum, Belem, mum’s companion, Chino, and I set off on an unforgettable exploration. Here’s our story, through my eyes.

Volcanic Beginnings: A Road Trip Past Popo and Izta

Our adventure began with a road trip from Mexico City to Palenque. As we set out on our journey, leaving the bustling streets of Mexico City behind, we were greeted by the majestic sight of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes framing the horizon. These towering natural landmarks, steeped in legend and beauty, served as a breathtaking backdrop, symbolizing the start of our epic quest into the heart of Mexico’s rich history and cultural heritage. The sight of these ancient volcanoes, known affectionately as “Popo” and “Izta,” provided a moment of awe and reflection on the natural wonders of Mexico, adding a mystical layer to our anticipation of the adventures ahead.

Nestled in History: Our Cosy Corner in Palenque

Upon our arrival in Palenque, we settled into Apartamentos Michael, a cosy retreat nestled in the lush surroundings of this historic area. The apartment offered ample space, featuring a welcoming living room, a bedroom adorned with a large bed and a charming flower lamp, and a kitchenette equipped with two complimentary bottles of water—a delightful touch after our long journey. The proximity to the ancient ruins allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the atmosphere of this timeless place.

The Ball Games of the Ancients: Thrills Among the Ruins

Exploring the ancient pyramids of Palenque was a journey back in time. I was particularly fascinated by the Mayan ball game, a brutal sport where only the hips, knees, and head could make contact with a hard ball. The stakes of this game were life and death, with the victor offered up for ceremonial sacrifice—a chilling yet fascinating aspect of Mayan culture. This place, steeped in beauty and history, is a treasure trove for any traveler, promising both awe and enlightenment at the marvels of the ancient world.

Beaches and Bonds: Tulum's Family Embrace

Our next chapter took us to Tulum, where the vibe shifted towards the serene beauty of the Caribbean coast. Here, we immersed ourselves in the local life, enjoying the beaches and taking time to connect with family. I even had a delightful conversation with my step-sister and her family, which was a highlight.

Lessons in Patience: A Day at Tulum's Sports Complex

A visit to the local sports complex in Tulum taught me an important lesson about hunger and patience, transforming a moment of discomfort into an opportunity for growth. Tulum felt incredibly safe, brimming with friendly faces and places perfect for family outings.

Day 6 was particularly memorable for its simplicity and the profound joy it brought. Our day was spent soaking in the essence of local life, finding comfort and excitement in the ordinary moments at home.

Jazz in the Sands: The Music That Ties Us Together

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the evening unfolded into something truly magical. We were captivated by the enchanting melodies of a beachside concert featuring Iraira Noriega, an integral part of the annual Jazz Festival held in Playa del Carmen

This festival, celebrated for bringing together talented artists from around the globe, added a layer of cultural richness to our adventure. The warmth of the night air, combined with the soulful music, set the perfect backdrop for an evening of dancing and playing in the sand. The energy and spirit of the festival, with the sound of waves gently crashing in the background, made for an unforgettable experience that highlighted the vibrant and artistic soul of the region.

Whispers of the Waves: Receiving Our Spiritual Names

In the heart of the Mayan Riviera, Playa Ikal emerged as a serene sanctuary, offering us a moment of profound tranquillity and spiritual connection. This secluded paradise, with its soft sands and whispering waves, set the stage for a transformative ceremony led by Lama Kempo. During this sacred ritual, we received spiritual names, mine being Cunchok Santem, or “joyous effort,” a guiding beacon emphasizing mindful engagement with life and the world around us.

Nature's Sacred Call: A Pledge to Preserve

Lama Kempo’s teachings during the ceremony highlighted the sanctity of nature, particularly water, urging us to recognize our role in preserving the environment’s delicate balance. This message resonated deeply within the untouched beauty of Playa Ikal, a reminder of our duty to safeguard these natural wonders. The ceremony, set against the backdrop of Playa Ikal’s pristine landscapes, was a powerful affirmation of the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of living in harmony with our surroundings.

Our experience at Playa Ikal, marked by personal reflection and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship, was a poignant reminder of nature’s ability to inspire and heal. It left us with a profound sense of peace and a deeper understanding of our responsibility towards preserving the natural and spiritual integrity of sacred places. This sacred encounter was not just a highlight of our journey but a pivotal moment that enriched our connection to the earth and each other.

Cancun's Vibrant Pulse: A City That Dances with the Sea

Our journey through the Mayan Riviera took an exciting turn as we ventured into Cancún and Progreso, two cities that, in their essence, encapsulate the breathtaking diversity of the Yucatán Peninsula.

In Cancún, we found ourselves enveloped in the city’s modern vibrancy, a bustling metropolis that stands in stark contrast to the ancient ruins we marvelled at earlier in our trip. The sparkling Caribbean waters and lively streets offered us endless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.

Progreso's Quiet Charm: Discovering Yucatan's Hidden Gem

Progreso, on the other hand, provided a serene escape with its tranquil beaches and the inviting warmth of its local communities. This coastal town in Yucatán is less known but equally captivating, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who call this part of the world home.

Guardians of the Cenote: A Family's Legacy

Our visit to a family-owned land near a cenote was a profound reminder of the Riviera’s natural wonders and the deep connection the local people maintain with their environment. This experience, immersed in the tranquillity of Playa Esmeralda and the surrounding area, highlighted the importance of preserving these natural sanctuaries. As we explored further, each step revealed the Riviera’s ability to blend the marvels of nature with the rich cultural heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula, making every moment an adventure in discovery and appreciation.

From Hotcakes to Marquesitas: A Palette of Discoveries

From indulging in hotcakes with cajeta near the pyramids to enjoying the delicious pizza in Tulum, every meal was an adventure in itself. Among these culinary delights, the discovery of Marquesitas, a typical Yucatan street food, became a highlight, especially appealing to us kids.

These delightful rolled crêpes, filled with cheese and a variety of sweet toppings, are not only a treat to the taste buds but also an affordable way to enjoy the local cuisine. The culinary experiences, coupled with the warmth of new friendships forged along the way, added layers of joy to our journey. Sampling these local specialities allowed us to dive deeper into the region’s culture, bringing an added flavour of authenticity and enjoyment to our adventure.

A Stop in Yanga: Echoes of Freedom

A particularly enriching detour was our stop in Yanga, a town famous for being the first place of freedom in the Americas. Yanga is named after Gaspar Yanga, an African leader who led a successful revolt against the Spanish colonizers in the early 17th century, establishing the first free African township in the Americas. This momentous event in history not only marked Yanga as a symbol of resistance and liberation but also provided us with a profound perspective on the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for freedom and dignity. Reflecting on our visit to Yanga added a deeper historical context to our journey, reminding us of the resilience and courage that have shaped the landscapes and communities we explored.
