After a year of back-to-back shifts and the usual high-stress grind, I decided to finally take a break—and what better destination than a escape to Thailand in December?
With its cool, dry season in full swing, I traded my white coat for flip-flops and jumped headfirst into the Land of Smiles.
Chapter Trail
First Stop: Bangkok’s Controlled Chaos
Touching down in Bangkok felt like landing in organized chaos. Tuk-tuks zigzagged through traffic, food carts sent waves of sizzling spice into the air, and temples gleamed like gold-leaf magnets for the soul.
I stayed near the Chao Phraya River, where I could easily hop on a ferry to explore the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Seeing the Reclining Buddha in person—massive, serene, and impossibly detailed—was more grounding than I expected.
Of course, the street food was a kind of therapy on its own. Pad Thai on a banana leaf, mango sticky rice at midnight, tom yum goong that made me tear up (from both spice and joy)—every bite was a lesson in balance and flavor.
Northbound to Chiang Mai: Lanterns & Inner Peace
Chiang Mai in December was pure magic. I arrived just in time for the Yi Peng Lantern Festival and watched thousands of glowing lanterns drift into the night sky like wishes set free. In the mornings, I joined a few meditation sessions at a local monastery, just to slow my racing mind and recalibrate.
Elephant Nature Park was a humbling visit. Unlike the exploitative elephant tourism I’d read about, this sanctuary focuses on rehabilitation. I helped feed the elephants and watched them roam freely—it was a reminder of how healing isn’t always about medicine.
Island Time: Phi Phi & Phuket
I ended my trip in the south, hopping between Phi Phi Islands and Phuket. The water was impossibly clear, the skies endlessly blue, and for once, I didn’t feel guilty doing absolutely nothing. I snorkeled with parrotfish, kayaked through sea caves, and even tried a Muay Thai class, where I was promptly and gracefully humbled.
At night, I found myself on Patong Beach, sipping coconut water and watching fire dancers spin arcs of flame against the surf. I laughed more in those few days than I had in months.
Conclusion
On my last morning, swinging gently in a hammock under a palm tree, I realized how badly I had needed this reset. December in Thailand offered me more than just a vacation—it reminded me to breathe, to taste, to observe, and to just be.
Back at work now, I carry a little piece of Thailand with me in every quiet moment I can carve out. Sometimes, healing isn’t just what we give—it’s what we allow ourselves to receive.
