Embarking on the Manaslu Circuit Trek was an adventure of a lifetime, blending my passion for medicine with a love for the mountains.
As a heart doctor, the challenge of high-altitude trekking in Nepal’s remote and rugged terrain was an invigorating departure from the daily grind of hospital rounds and patient consultations. This blog chronicles my unforgettable journey, from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the serene and majestic peaks of the Himalayas.
Chapter Trail
Day 1 to Day 2: Arrival and Exploration in Kathmandu
Upon arriving in Kathmandu, I was greeted by the vibrant energy of Nepal’s capital. The following day was spent acclimatizing and exploring the city’s historical and cultural gems.
From the ancient Newari architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square to the spiritual ambiance of Boudhanath Stupa, the city tour set the perfect tone for the adventure ahead. A special thanks to our local travel expert for organizing this insightful exploration.
Day 3 to Day 4: Journey to Arughat Bazar and Trek to Soti Khola
The trek officially began with a scenic drive to Arughat Bazar, a lively market town divided by the Buri Gandaki River.
The next day, we trekked to Soti Khola, passing through lush forests and picturesque villages. The sight of Sringi Himal in the distance and the refreshing dip in the natural swimming holes at Soti Khola were highlights of these initial days.
Day 5 to Day 6: Trekking to Machha Khola and Jagat
The path to Machha Khola was both challenging and rewarding, with trails winding through dense sal forests and alongside the roaring Buri Gandaki River. The following day’s trek to Jagat included navigating rocky terrain and suspension bridges, providing a thrilling sense of adventure as we made our way deeper into the mountains.
Day 7 to Day 8: Reaching Ekle Bhatti and Deng
From Jagat, we continued to Ekle Bhatti, traversing cliffs and millet fields. The Tibetan influence became more apparent as we moved northward. The trek to Deng was equally captivating, taking us through uninhabited gorges and bamboo forests. Each step brought us closer to the heart of the Himalayas.
Day 9 to Day 10: Trek to Ghap and Lhogaon
Climbing higher, we reached Ghap and then Lhogaon. These days were marked by steep ascents and breathtaking scenery, including views of Manaslu and Naike Peak. The trails led us through forests alive with wildlife and past intricately carved mani walls, adding a spiritual element to the physical journey.
Day 11 to Day 12: Ascending to Samagaon and Samdo
The trek to Samagaon introduced us to expansive plateaus and the striking Shyaula with its panoramic vistas.
At Samagaon, we immersed ourselves in the local culture, visiting the village gompa and marveling at the high-altitude crops. The following day’s hike to Samdo, nestled behind a ridge, provided a glimpse into the lives of the resilient Himalayan communities.
Day 13 to Day 15: Larkya Phedi to Bimtang via Larkya Pass
One of the most challenging parts of the trek was crossing the Larkya Pass. Starting from Larkya Phedi, out local travel expert and I embarked on a strenuous climb to the pass at 5100 meters.
The reward was unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks, followed by a demanding descent to Bimtang. This leg of the journey tested our endurance and resolve, but the sense of accomplishment was immense.
Day 16 to Day 17: Trekking Down to Syange
Descending from Bimtang to Syange, we passed through diverse landscapes, from pine forests to terraced fields. The trail meandered through picturesque villages like Tilje and Thonje, offering a softer, more pastoral beauty compared to the rugged high-altitude trails.
Day 17 to Day 19: Return to Kathmandu and Farewell
The final stretch of the trek took us to Bhulbule, where we enjoyed the last glimpses of rural Nepal before driving back to Kathmandu. Our return was celebrated with a farewell dinner, a moment to reflect on the journey and share our experiences. The camaraderie and shared adventure forged strong bonds among the group.
