Leaving the hustle of the more famous beach towns behind, my journey led me south to Bacalar, often nicknamed the “Maldives of Mexico.”

While it’s a lake, not the ocean, the moment I saw the water, I understood the comparison. My time here felt slower, more intentional, and utterly magical.

Chapter Trail

The Main Attraction: My Boat Trip on the Lagoon

The single best decision I made upon arrival was booking a boat tour of the Bacalar Lagoon. This place truly earns its name, the Lagoon of Seven Colors. The water shifts so dramatically from pale aqua near the shore to deep, inky indigo over hidden cenotes.

  • Pirate Channel (Canal de Los Piratas): This was a historical highlight for me. Sailing through this narrow channel, where pirates once snuck in from the sea centuries ago, was surreal. The water here is wonderfully shallow—I could stand waist-deep—and I loved taking that famous photo by the sunken boat mural.
  • Cenote Negro: Seeing the abrupt drop-off where the bright turquoise water plunges into near-black darkness was mesmerizing. It’s humbling to see the deep, ancient cenotes feeding this massive freshwater system right before your eyes. I didn’t swim here (it’s too deep!), but seeing that color contrast was worth the boat ride alone.
  • Bird Island (Isla de los Pájaros): Gliding past this small, protected island, covered in lush greenery, was a peaceful moment. I spent a few minutes just watching the local birdlife in their sanctuary.

For the most serene experience, I chose a sailboat tour over a noisy motorboat. Having the engine off and just sailing quietly across those incredible colors felt like the most respectful and relaxing way to witness this natural wonder.

The "Lazy River" Experience: Los Rápidos

If the boat tour was my favorite sightseeing, Los Rápidos was my favorite activity. This is a narrow section of the lagoon lined with mangroves that creates a natural, gentle current—a perfect, crystal-clear lazy river!

I paid the entrance fee, grabbed a life jacket, and just let the current carry me downstream. It’s pure, unadulterated fun! What I found even more fascinating was seeing the stromatolites nearby.

Our guide pointed out these rock-like formations, explaining they are among the oldest living organisms on Earth. It was amazing to realize I was floating near living fossils! I made sure to admire them from a distance, as they are incredibly delicate.

The Quiet Moments

Bacalar isn’t all about high-energy water activities. I discovered the charm of starting the day before the crowds.

  • Sunrise SUP: One morning, I forced myself out of bed at 5:00 AM for a Sunrise Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) session. Paddling out onto the glassy, still water as the sky turned pink and gold was unforgettable. The lagoon was silent, and I felt like I had this massive, beautiful lake all to myself. That calm reflection on the water is an image that will stay with me forever.
  • History on Land: For a break from the water, I visited the Fort San Felipe. It’s a classic Spanish colonial structure built to defend against pirates. Climbing onto the ramparts gave me an elevated view over the town and the northern end of the lagoon—a great way to appreciate the geography.
  • Local Eats: I skipped some of the trendier spots and found joy in the simple pleasures. Tracking down the best chilaquiles for breakfast and finding a spot by the water for sunset tacos and a cold beer was my evening ritual.

Conclusion

Bacalar is a true Pueblo Mágico—a place that moves at a different rhythm. It’s a quieter, more laid-back alternative to the Yucatán’s coastal hotspots, and that tranquility is its greatest charm.
