As a mom of two, I rarely get the chance to embark on a solo adventure, but when the opportunity to explore Croatia’s stunning landscapes presented itself, I couldn’t resist.

I spent seven unforgettable days hiking through Northern Velebit and Paklenica National Parks, immersing myself in nature, and recharging in ways only a mother’s soul can understand.

Chapter Trail

Day 1: Arrival at Northern Velebit National Park / Zavizan Mountain Hut

The journey began with a flight into Croatia, where I stocked up on supplies before heading to Northern Velebit National Park. The anticipation built as I approached Zavizan Mountain Hut, my home for the first night.

Meeting my guide and the group, I instantly felt a sense of camaraderie—fellow adventurers ready to conquer the trails together. We spent the evening exploring nearby peaks, and the views of Kvarner Bay were nothing short of spectacular. As the sun set, we gathered around for dinner and reviewed our itinerary for the days ahead, excitement buzzing in the air.

Day 2 to Day 4: Hiking the Premuzic Trail

The next morning, we set off on the first stage of the Premuzic Trail, a hike that promised both ease and incredible scenery. As we trekked from Zavizan to Mountain Hut Alan, I marveled at the beauty around me—rolling hills, rugged peaks, and expansive views that made every step worthwhile.

The hike was gentle, perfect for easing into the adventure, and by the time we reached our destination, I felt a deep connection with the land. The evening was spent sharing stories with fellow hikers, and I fell asleep knowing this trip was exactly what I needed.

Day three brought more challenges as we continued the Premuzic Trail from Alan to Skorpovac. This 20 km stretch was more demanding, but the alternating forests and meadows, punctuated by breathtaking viewpoints, made it a joy.

There’s something about being surrounded by nature that clears your mind and brings clarity—a gift I was truly appreciating. After the hike, we transferred to Kugina Kuća for dinner and an overnight stay. The sense of accomplishment from the day’s hike left me with a satisfied smile as I drifted off to sleep.

The final section of the Premuzic Trail awaited us on day four. After a hearty breakfast, we returned to Skorpovac to tackle the 15 km hike to Baske Ostarije. This segment was moderately challenging, with a mix of terrain that kept things interesting.

I found myself lost in thought, reflecting on the beauty of Croatia and the sense of peace this trip was bringing me. By the end of the day, I was physically tired but emotionally rejuvenated—a balance every mom dreams of achieving.

Day 5 to Day 6: Paklenica National Park

After days of hiking, a transfer to Starigrad and a beach break (thankfully, the weather was perfect!) was just what I needed. The waves, the sand, and the sound of the sea were pure therapy. But the adventure wasn’t over yet—Paklenica National Park beckoned with its monolithic rocks and legendary climbing spots.

I embarked on a 6 km trail through the park, marveling at the sheer cliffs and the climbers defying gravity. The day ended at Paklenica Hut, where I slept soundly, dreaming of peaks and trails.

The final full day of hiking began with breakfast and a good stretch, preparing us for a circular route through the beech forests of Paklenica. The trail had its steeper sections, but the reward—reaching Veliki Golic peak—was worth every effort.

Standing at the top, looking out over the vast, rugged landscape, I felt a sense of accomplishment that only comes from pushing yourself beyond what you thought possible. It was a perfect conclusion to my hiking adventure.

With a heart full of memories and a camera full of photos, I departed Croatia, leaving behind the trails but taking with me the peace, joy, and sense of renewal that only a trip like this can bring. As I headed back to my family, I knew I was returning not just as a mom, but as a woman who had reconnected with herself, ready to take on the world once more.
