This past November, my family and I embarked on an unforgettable 11-day journey to Greece.
The autumn vibes were absolutely enchanting, with mild weather and fewer crowds allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the rich culture and history of this ancient land. We fell in love with Greece’s landscapes, from its bustling cities to serene islands, and we can’t wait to go back.
Chapter Trail
Day 1 to Day 3: ARrival in Athens
Our adventure began in Athens, where we were warmly welcomed at the airport and transferred to our hotel. After checking in, a friendly staff member met us in the hotel lobby for a welcome briefing, providing us with a folder containing our vouchers, tickets, and a customized travel guide. This personalized touch set the tone for the amazing experiences that awaited us.
The next day, our guide led us on the “Mythology Tour of Athens.” This tour was a deep dive into the soul of Athens, blending ancient history with modern life. We strolled along streets lined with historical sites, from famous landmarks like the Acropolis to hidden gems.
The highlight was witnessing the Greek changing of the guard ceremony at Syntagma Square, a poignant reminder of the country’s enduring traditions.
Day 4 to Day 5: Athens to Chania and Private Street Stories of Chania
After breakfast and check-out, we flew to Chania, Crete. The Old Town of Chania, with its intense medieval architecture and the picturesque Venetian port, felt like a walk back in time.
Our private tour of Chania was a rich tapestry of myths, local culture, and delectable cuisine. We explored the Ottoman neighborhood, the Jewish Quarter, and the “street of the Knives,” ending our day with raki and mezedes in a historic neighborhood.
Day five was an adventure! We visited a Cretan village, trekked through a gorge, and discovered a remote location by private boat. The ancient city of Lissos was a highlight, with its ruins and the healing temple of Asclepius offering breathtaking views.
We savored a home-cooked organic breakfast and learned about the local flora used in the Cretan diet. This day was a blend of history, nature, and adventure, leaving us with unforgettable memories.
Day 6 to Day 7: Dive into Magnificent Balos Beach/Private Day Cruise with Yacht
We spent the sixth day on the stunning Balos Beach, known for its turquoise waters and exotic scenery. We avoided the tourist crowds by taking a private yacht from Chania old port, allowing us to enjoy the beach in peace. The lagoon’s shallow, warm waters were perfect for our young children, and snorkeling beyond the rocks revealed deeper, cooler waters teeming with marine life.
Day 8: Heraklion to Santorini
Our next destination was the iconic island of Santorini. After a ferry ride from Heraklion, we arrived in Santorini and spent the evening exploring the island’s charming streets and breathtaking views. The autumn air added a magical touch to our walk, making us fall even more in love with the island.
Day 9 to Day 11: Santorini: Sights, Wines & Clicks Tour Private Tour
We spent day nine sailing around Santorini’s caldera on a luxurious Lagoon 500 yacht. We swam in hot springs, snorkeled near the volcano, and enjoyed freshly prepared food and drinks on board. The highlight was the legendary Santorini sunset, which painted the sky in vibrant hues as we relaxed on the yacht’s deck.
Our final full day in Santorini was a mix of sightseeing and culinary delights. We visited the picturesque village of Oia, famous for its dramatic setting and stunning architecture.
We then explored the inland village of Pyrgos, with its pastel-colored houses and medieval castle ruins. Along the way, we tasted local specialties and Santorini wines, ending our tour with a deeper appreciation for the island’s beauty and flavors.
On our final day, we enjoyed a leisurely Athenian breakfast before our driver picked us up for the transfer to Athens airport. As we boarded our flight back home, we reflected on the incredible journey we had experienced. Greece had captivated our hearts with its history, culture, and natural beauty, and we left with a promise to return.
Conclusion
Our family trip to Greece was nothing short of magical. The autumn vibes, with their mild weather and fewer tourists, allowed us to fully appreciate the country’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes.
From the ancient ruins of Athens to the serene beaches of Crete and the dramatic vistas of Santorini, each day brought new adventures and discoveries. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn about Greek culture and history firsthand, and we can’t wait to return and explore even more of this enchanting land.
