As a school teacher, my February break was the perfect time to embark on a long-awaited adventure. I chose Japan, a country I’ve always wanted to visit, especially in the winter.
Thanks to Baboo Travel and the wonderful local travel expert who planned this trip, my 10-day journey through Japan was not just a vacation but an experience that enriched my soul. Japan is truly magical in the winter—its landscapes, culture, and people left me in awe.
Chapter Trail
Day 1 to Day 2: Tokyo’s Vibrant Heartbeat
I arrived in Tokyo, and the city greeted me with its vibrant energy and modern charm. I spent my first evening exploring the Shinjuku area, with its dazzling lights and bustling streets.
The next day was a whirlwind tour of Tokyo’s iconic spots—Tokyo Bay, the Imperial Palace, and the towering Tokyo Sky Tree. The view from the Sky Tree was breathtaking, especially with the winter sun shining on the city. The warmth of the Japanese chanko hot pot at lunch was a perfect contrast to the cool winter air, and the stories of sumo wrestlers made the experience even richer.
Day 3 to Day 4: Kyoto’s Timeless Beauty
A bullet train ride took me to Kyoto, where tradition meets tranquility. Kyoto in winter is like stepping into a postcard—snow-dusted temples, serene gardens, and the gentle rustling of bamboo in the breeze. I visited the Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, and the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. A day trip to Nara was equally magical, with friendly deer roaming the park and the majestic Todai-ji Temple standing tall against the winter sky.
Day 5 to Day 6: The Flavor of Osaka and Himeji’s Grandeur
Osaka was next on the list, and it didn’t disappoint. From the historical Osaka Castle to the vibrant streets of Dotonbori, Osaka is a city that knows how to celebrate life. The food was a highlight—takoyaki, kushikatsu, and okonomiyaki were just the beginning. I also took a day trip to Himeji, where the stunning Himeji Castle stood proudly, surrounded by beautiful winter landscapes. It was like walking through history.
Day 7 to Day 8: Reflecting in Hiroshima and Relaxing in Hakone
Hiroshima was a humbling experience. Visiting the Peace Memorial Park and Museum reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit.
Miyajima Island, with its iconic floating torii gate, was peaceful and serene, offering a perfect balance to the somber mood of Hiroshima. Then came Hakone, a place of relaxation. Staying in a traditional ryokan and soaking in an onsen while surrounded by snowy mountains was the perfect way to unwind.
Day 9 to Day 10: The Majesty of Mount Fuji and Tokyo’s Farewell
No trip to Japan is complete without seeing Mount Fuji. The majestic mountain covered in snow was even more spectacular than I imagined. Crossing Lake Ashi on a pirate ship and visiting the Hakone Shrine were highlights. I returned to Tokyo for my final day, indulging in some last-minute shopping in Shibuya and reflecting on the incredible journey.
