Exploring the Dolomite Mountain Range was a dream come true. The towering peaks, lush valleys, and historical trails offered a hiking experience like no other.
As a park ranger, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures, and this trip exceeded all my expectations. It was so incredible that I can’t wait to return with friends and share the magic of the Dolomites with them.
Chapter Trail
Day 1: Arrival in Cortina d'Ampezzo
The journey began in the charming town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Nestled in a vast valley and surrounded by the imposing peaks of Croda del Lago and the Tofane, Cortina was the perfect starting point.
After settling into our cozy hotel, we had time to explore the town. The local culture, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning mountain views set the tone for the days ahead.
Day 2: Averau and the Cinque Torri Path
Our first hike took us to Falzarego Pass, the gateway to the 5 Torri trail. The path gradually ascended, revealing an otherworldly landscape of stone fields and rocky outcrops. Reaching the foot of Averau at 2649 meters, we were treated to a breathtaking panorama.
Continuing around the mountain to Nuvolau Pass, we conquered the additional 150 meters to the Nuvolau summit, which offered unparalleled views. The historical 5 Torri path, with its remnants of World War I battles, added a layer of depth to our adventure. By the end of the day, we were back in Cortina, buzzing with excitement.
Day 3: Climbing Lagazuoi
Starting from Falzarego Pass again, we embarked on the climb to Lagazuoi. The 360-degree views from the top were nothing short of spectacular, with Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites, visible in the distance.
The hike was interspersed with military history, as we explored remains from the First World War. Descending into a serene valley, we visited the Scotoni refuge, a popular spot for Italian families. After a final ascent, we caught the bus back to Cortina, eager for the next day’s adventure.
Day 4: Touring Tofana di Rozes
Tofana di Rozes, the seventh peak of the Dolomites, awaited us on Day 4. Beginning at the Dibona refuge, we traversed a magnificent balcony path that offered sweeping views of the Cinque Torri and Croda del Lago.
The sheer rock walls of Tofana di Rozes were awe-inspiring, and the hike around them was legendary. A private transfer brought us back to Cortina, our hearts full of the day’s stunning vistas.
Day 5: Exploring Croda del Lago
Day 5 took us to Giau Pass, where we embarked on a hike showcasing the Dolomites’ extraordinary diversity. The path led us through verdant pastures and up to the dramatic cliffs of Croda del Lago. Descending gently to Lago di Federa, we enjoyed panoramic views before entering a beautiful forest. The return to Cortina was peaceful, and we reflected on the incredible landscapes we had traversed.
Day 6: The Iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Our final day was a highlight of the trip: Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Starting from Auronzo, we approached these three iconic peaks, each a stone giant in its own right.
Hiking up to Locatelli refuge, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of Cima Grande, Cima Ovest, and Cima Piccola. The north face of these peaks was a sight to behold, and it was the perfect way to conclude our adventure. We returned to Cortina in the afternoon, our spirits high from the week’s achievements.
Conclusion
The Dolomite Mountain Range is a treasure trove of natural beauty, historical significance, and thrilling hikes. This trip was an unforgettable experience, filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and challenging trails.
I can’t wait to return with friends and share the joy of discovering the Dolomites. Until then, the memories of this adventure will keep me inspired and longing for the next journey.
